We are moving into a house that has hardwood in family living and dining rooms.

A good sign that that the carpet is over existing hardwood that matches the wood in the dining room would be a height difference between the two floors at that threshold. If the carpet is over the same flooring that s in there the carpet should be 3 4 higher than the wood floor in the dining room. My inclination is to go with carpet. Carpet vaccume won t get everything.

1900 for carpet vs 5 7k for hardwood. Carpet comes to around 4500. The cost differences are substantial.
